Reducing energy use is a key component of sustainability: Brick's durability and long life cycle reduce the need for replacement, thereby eliminating further manufacturing energy required for replacement products. Hanson strives to conserve energy in the firing process, using less than 50% energy to produce brick in 2004 when compared to 1981. Further fuel reduction efforts since 2004 have totaled 10.8%.

The savings in fuel use since 2004 has also resulted in significant reduction in emissions, a reduction of approximately 85,000 tons of CO brick plants have scrubbers which largely eliminate emissions, and more scrubbers are planned with upgrades to existing plants and construction of new plants. Hanson has spent millions of dollars in upgrading plants and making them more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Made of primarily local, natural, non-toxic elements from the earth - Hanson's concrete structures and clay brick are inert. They are not flammable, will not react with other materials and do not release chemicals into their surroundings. In an effort to reduce on site construction waste and resulting burial in landfills, Hanson Brick is offering the Brick Back Program to accept clean brick waste at our source manufacturing locations. The brick waste will be converted into a ground recyclable material that will be added to our existing products. The Hanson Brick Back Program can also help contribute to LEED® credits under MR credit 2.1 and 2.2 - Construction Waste Management.
